We are the Boğaziçi University Free Software and Open Knowledge Society (buFOSS). We are a community of students that want to spread the use of open source software and open knowledge among our peers and teachers.
Our Mission In an era of proprietary software and user tracking, we stand for the alternative. For Boğaziçi, we want to implement:
- Free Software: We advocate for software that respects the user's freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change, and improve the software.
- Open Knowledge: Following the steps of the Wikimedia movement, we work to ensure that human knowledge remains free for everyone to access and repurpose.
- Sovereign Infrastructures: We teach students how to host their own services, manage their own keys, and protect their own privacy. We help fellow clubs and societies get away from depending on corporates to operate digitally.
Our Philosophy We align ourselves with the "Boğaziçi Standard". We follow the tradition of critical thinking, academic freedom, and democratic participation. We believe that people should be able to not be tracked by mega corporations. We do not accept corporate sponsorship that compromises our values. We host our code on Codeberg, not GitHub. We use Matrix, not WhatsApp. If you're someone tired of being tracked online or hates that corporations have so much control over your digital presence, you have a home here. Check our calendar for our events. Fill out our form to join our self-hosted Matrix chatroom.
